The book starts with a fantastically taught first chapter with old man tortoise trying to outrun the mechanised monsters and I did feel genuinely gutted when he didn’t make it. The author has also written Desert Solitaire and Livfs Progress. There were some parts that irked me — Bonnie’s drawn-out feminist rant haydukke not enjoyable to read though it might have been necessary for Abbey to clear the air with all those sexism charges ; grumbled as I realized the only blatantly gay character had AIDS; and Abbey’s character assassination of Murray Bookchin.

Mar 02, Geoff Balme rated it really liked it Shelves: Years after the release of his seminal work, The Monkey Wrench Gang, Edward Abbey comes round to finish the story and confront the real-life consequences of his original story, namely the hayduks of Earth First! His heroes are not pretty, they are bellicose and belligerent, and given to much cussing and ill-talk. Falls very very short of its original “Monkey Wrench Gang” and loses so much of the fun moments that made that book so wonderful and funny.
He’s also great at character descriptions. He makes me laugh – and makes me glad haydukf there remain desperadoes lurking in the juniper bushes. Feb 10, Benjamin Richards rated it did not like it.
