I enjoyed the a Josep Pla’s notebooks, detailing his 19th and 20th years, might seem incredibly precocious, but the introduction tells us that he came back to them as a much older, more established writer, fixing them up for posterity. At twenty-one, Pla was nervous and lethargic, an obsessive writer and poor student, brilliant but taciturn and extremely insecure about his own talent. It opens with a young Pla home in Palafrugell from his university in Barcelona, which has been closed as a result of the epidemic of Spanish flu, and it closes, nicely, a fl more than a year later, with Pla about to take up griz first post as a foreign correspondent for a Barcelona paper.

Mar 10, Nicholas During rated it it was amazing. I’m not sure whether to compare this book to Boswell’s “Life of Samuel Johnson” or Anthony Bourdain’s entertaining round-the-world visits eating food in unlikely spots.

College was boring in spots bad professorsthings ran amuck, money was scarce but still he spent most days on the townand eventually he graduates, but then can’t afford the diploma. As a journalist he worked in France, Italy, England, Germany and Russia, from where he wrote political and cultural chronicles in Catalan. Josep Pla, a budding young writer, was studying law in Barcelona in when the university was shut down because of the Spanish flu epidemic.

The Gray Notebook is a book that encompasses a locale and a time and a place and a set of people, but done in such an inspired way that it can’t help make the reader look at their own time and place and friends in a new and different way, a way that is because both more perceptive and also more creative, as one can only imagine how Pla would describe what is happening around you in his own words, or inspire you to do it yourself. The book is also as much memoir as it is diary, and indeed it’s sometimes a bit disconcerting to read the purportedly twenty-one-year-old Pla look back on his adolescence as if from a great distance much of the diary, then, was obviously revised, and probably rather heavily, much later.

Esta es la maravilla de este escritor: The book is so full of beautiful images eo perfect adjectives that sometimes is too much. You’re immediately struck by how much spare time people had a century ago. Good book, on the whole, and the first book I’ve read all the way through in Catalan I’ve read bits and pieces of other books of Pla’s and a story or two by other writers.

Of course part of the joy is that the Catalan culture seems to provide such charming examples of this, a culture and language that Pla is able to create out of very little while at the same joswp referring to a vast history and specific locations and motivations. This listing has ended. Jun 28, Daniel Polansky added it Shelves: El quadern gris is a long book, and my brief reaction to it here in no way does it justice. Unlike Proust this book is not about how memories of events can turn into creative ideas and interpretations of what has happened and how it changed things, it is really meant to be a clear, precise, but also beautiful look at what the world is like. There is no plot to speak of, and nothing really happens, and that’s a tough task to se man, I hate writing negative reviews, it’s tiring and it makes me feel nasty, even though the last three authors cuadero long dead.

The journal is filled with won Ostensibly a diary of a young man finishing, unwillingly and unhappily, his law degree and, more happily and enthusiastically, starting a career as a writer, Pla really worked on The Gray Notebook for over 40 years and only published in much later in life, reworked but not still in the form of a daily journal that makes it such an interesting and hard to explain work. I probably preferred the entries from Good book, on the whole, and the first book I’ve read all the way through in Catalan I’ve read bits and pieces of other books of Pla’s and a story or two by other writers.

See original listing El cuaderno gris Josep Pla. Thanks for telling us about the problem. Pla is a journalist, and this book is not so much about narrative and invention—though the apocryphal writing process bring this somewhat into doubt—but about reality and perception and how best to put the first, through the latter, into words on a page. Con grandes momentos, empero. What is best about it, I think, is a model for how a young writer should work on his or her craft.

I probably preferred the entries from life in the country Palafrugell and with his family and village friends to those from Pla’s student life and subsequent initiation into journalism in Barcelona. I enjoyed the almost idyllic entries here and the many people we meet in Pla’s character sketches.
