One option when using Forest is to scatter single blades of grass over the field area. By default, in VRay and Mental Ray, Forest does not create a mesh to render itself, but uses a custom shader that generates native instances for the render engine.
Autograss includes eleven preset grass types covering the most commonly used grasses. You’ve got photorealistic grass that renders in V-Ray for 3ds Max. They were modeled using a plane with a Bend modifier, and moving some vertices. This tutorial shows you how to create realistic grass. Advanced memory management Unlimited grass in your scenes Fast, multi-threaded rendering Eleven grass type presets Twelve grass material presets Four earth material presets. In this way, we can modify both objects parametrically, adjusting the density and distribution of the grass much more easily.
This lets us auutograss millions of autogarss, using minimal resources. We have used Forest Lite and VRay to create it.

Select your object, click Autograss, and you’re done. This tutoriall of nesting parametric objects is useful for other scenes as well. This material is copyrighted by iToosoft.
We have included in the Max file a finished scene, with all the elements ready to render to get the final image. In addition, Autograss provides you with mapping and variation to produce special effects like worn-out trails and lawnmower paths.
Autograss works in any scene, from a simple lawn to landscaping an entire city block. Although this method works, it is not efficient at filling large surfaces because millions of single items must be created and rendered by VRay.
It works with all of V-Ray’s great features, like shadows, reflections, depth of field, and global illumination, and there’s no need to divide your scene into passes or layers. In VRay, to create the translucent effect that we observe in the real vegetation, we use a VRay2SideMtl tutorail for the grass. We place the sun in front of the camera and very low in the sky, to back light the grass and enhance the translucent effect.
No crashes, no nonsense. But if you use Mental Ray, you may also download a ready-to-render scene for Mental from the files section. But to use the Forest clump as a source for other Forest objects, as we want to do on this tutorial, augograss must disable the VRay shader and generate a standard mesh:.
Finally, we suggest you try changing the density parameters of both Forest objects, and the radius of the clump of grass, to get different grass distributions. The key of this tutorial, is that we use two nested Forest objects.
To improve the composition, we have included some flowers in the scene. One to create the clump of grass, and the other to scatter multiple copies of it over the surface. Since the grass blades are planar objects, we have to enable the “Thin-walled” checkbox, in the Advanced Rendering options of the material.
We are using cookies to give you the best experience on our site. When possible, it is better to create a clump of grass object, and scatter instances of it over the surface using Forest, in order qutograss have only several thousands items in the final scene.
And it’s fully multi-threaded, so all your cores are driven to their full potential. That means Autograss uses only a fixed amount of RAM no matter how much grass is in the scene, whether it’s a one-acre lawn or an entire golf course.
