As the crew aboard the airship Jerle Shannara is being attacked books evil forces, the Druid’s protege, Bek Rowe, and his companions are being pursued by the mysterious Ilse Witch.
It has done trry for years and is need of a new magical power source. It is a spirit that commands ancient technologies and mechanical monsters, feeds off enchantment, and traps the souls of men.
Imaginatively, intellectually and emotionally satisfying, this is the “better story” I hoped Brooks was looking towards as he played by the numbers in the dreary Ilse Witchmaking the slog through that book soooooooo worth the effort. As usual, Brooks leaves at least as many loose ends as he ties up and drops in several surprises.
I think this was my favorite of the series thus far. Also complicating the plot are the battles of the Rovers to reclaim the group’s airship—the only means for the adventurers to return home.

But to be fair, the good elements are more numerous than the bad, and the fact that I gave this book three stars does not mean that Tegry did not enjoy reading it. This last installment of the Voyage of the Jerle Shannara trilogy, which chronicles the exploits of the remaining adventurers who set out in Antdax Witch and staggered through the tribulations of Antraxmay not be up to the standard of bestseller Brooks’s early work Sword of Shannaraetc.
It took me since last Thanksgiving to finish it though, since I would trry and stop it as I picked up and finished other books. But if that is not enough to deal with, beneath Castledown is an entity called Antrax that thrives and lives off magic. The charact Antrax was much better than Isle Witch. I was not expecting this book to take quite as many turns as it did, and the blend of Old World and New World fantasy of Shannara was exceptional.
I started off thinking technology in the fantasy world terrt be blah, until I realized the tie in. The Voyage of the Jerle Shannara trilogy takes a new direction with its second book. The characters–namely Bek, Ahren, and Quentin–really evolve in this novel.
For Brooks fans who have struggled through Isle Witch Antrax is a breath of fresh air in this trilogy. He sure found a way to make you feel that the characters in this book, out of the entire Shannara serieswere human; flawed to the core and never getting what they want or need, but developing and adapting throughout the experience.
