European Parliament appeals to Iran to release Bahá’í prisoners

The European Parliament has appealed to the government of Iran to release the seven Bahá’í leaders who are being held without charge in Tehran’s Evin prison.
The appeal came as part of three resolutions on democracy and human rights adopted at the end of the European Parliament’s Strasbourg plenary session.
Observing that believers of the Bahá’í faith are harshly persecuted in Iran, the European Parliament called upon the Iranian authorities to “live up to the government’s requirement to respect religious minorities”. The resolution asks that Bahá’í leaders who have been imprisoned solely on the basis of their belief be promptly released.
