Scottish religious leaders from Christian, Muslim, Jewish, Buddhist and Bahá’í communities have called for the immediate release of the six prominent members of the Iranian Bahá’í community who were arrested by the Iranian authorities in Tehran last month.
The leaders include the newly appointed Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, the Right Reverend David Lunan, pictured, as well as the head of the Roman Catholic church, Cardinal Keith O’Brien.
Their statement reads:
We, the under-noted religious leaders of Scotland are very concerned about the arbitrary arrests of leaders of the Bahá’í community in Iran solely on the basis of their faith.
We call on the Iranian authorities to fulfil their obligations under the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights with regard to religious freedom and ensure the immediate and safe release of these prisoners.
The statement has been endorsed by the following religious leaders of Scotland:
Rt Rev David Lunan, Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland
The Most Rev Keith Patrick O’Brien, Cardinal and Archbishop of St Andrews and Edinburgh
The Venerable Rewatha, Sri Lankan Buddhist Centre
Rabbi Moshe Rubin, Giffnock Synagogue (Orthodox Jewish)
Rabbi Nancy Morris, Glasgow New Synagogue (Reformed Jewish)
Imam Mustaqeem Shah, UK Islamic Mission, Glasgow
Mr Allan Forsyth, Bahá’í Council for Scotland
